A proposed class action lawsuit has been filed against Aveda Institute of Los Angeles (AILA) on behalf of all students who attended either the cosmetology or esthetician (skin care) program at any point from April 6, 2016 to the present.
The lawsuit alleges that Aveda failed to provide the required educational services and used students as an unpaid workforce servicing Aveda’s paying customers. The complaint alleges that the school failed to provide qualified instructors, failed to teach students how to perform the required techniques, required students to perform routine maintenance or custodial work like doing laundry and sweeping floors, falsely certified the completion of coursework, and made false promises about prospective students’ ability to find jobs after graduation. Most students had to take out thousands of dollars in student loans to pay for this subpar education.
The proposed class seeks damages on behalf of all students within the relevant timeframe, including reimbursement of tuition and compensation for unpaid wages.
